Tennessee Independent Living Council
Independent Living
SILCs are federally mandated and present in every state. By law, their boards are more than half made up of individuals with disabilities. The Tennessee SILC promotes access to housing, transportation, employment, physical and mental health resources and other aspects of independent living for disabled residents. The Council won’t award you a grant, but it will help you in your search.
The Independent Living Council (ILC) in Tennessee is a state-level organization dedicated to promoting and enhancing the independence, inclusion, and empowerment of individuals with disabilities. The council serves as an advisory body, working closely with the Tennessee Department of Human Services to provide guidance on policies, programs, and services that impact the lives of people with disabilities.
The ILC works towards the goal of creating an inclusive society where individuals with disabilities have equal opportunities and access to resources, enabling them to live independently and participate fully in their communities. They collaborate with various stakeholders, including government agencies, service providers, advocacy groups, and individuals with disabilities themselves, to advocate for the rights and needs of this population.
Through its initiatives, the ILC promotes independent living skills, self-advocacy, employment, accessible housing, transportation, and assistive technology. They offer information, training, and resources to individuals with disabilities, their families, and service providers, aiming to increase awareness and understanding of disability-related issues.
The ILC also plays a crucial role in promoting systemic change by engaging in policy development, monitoring compliance with disability rights laws, and addressing barriers to independence. They work towards improving the accessibility of public spaces, transportation, and communication, while also advocating for legislative changes that enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
The Independent Living Council in Tennessee serves as a valuable resource and advocate for individuals with disabilities, striving to create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone can thrive independently.
