Washington Sate Independent Living Council

Independent Living

WASILC works to promote the principles of independent living on behalf of the disabled residents of Washington. It doesn’t make financial contributions to individuals, but it is an important resource for information as you seek to increase your mobility and self-determination.

The State Independent Living Council (SILC) located in Washington is an organization dedicated to advancing the rights and independence of individuals with disabilities. It is a federally mandated council that operates under the provisions of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. The SILC is composed primarily of individuals with disabilities who provide leadership and advocacy on disability issues.

The SILC's primary focus is to promote the philosophy of independent living, which emphasizes self-determination, full inclusion, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities. The council works collaboratively with other state agencies, community organizations, and stakeholders to develop and implement policies and programs that support independent living.

The SILC plays a vital role in advising the Governor and state agencies on matters related to disability policy and services. It also engages in strategic planning, sets priorities, and allocates resources to ensure the needs of individuals with disabilities are met effectively. Additionally, the SILC provides information and resources to the public, conducts outreach activities, and promotes awareness about disability rights and accessibility.

Through its efforts, the State Independent Living Council in Washington strives to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by empowering them to live independently, participate fully in their communities, and achieve their goals and aspirations.
