Minnesota Independent Living Council

Independent Living

Minnesota’s SILC helps operate the state’s Independent Living Centers, informs public policy concerning the elderly and disabled and otherwise supports these people. SILCs, which operate in every state, don’t award disability grants, but they can point you in the right directions.

The Independent Living Council (ILC) in Minnesota is a state-level organization that promotes and supports independent living for individuals with disabilities. The ILC operates as part of the statewide network of Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities to live self-directed lives.

The ILC in Minnesota serves as a resource center, providing information, advocacy, and support services to individuals with disabilities, their families, and the community. It offers assistance in areas such as accessible housing, transportation, employment, education, and healthcare. The council works collaboratively with other disability-related organizations and government agencies to enhance the quality of life and promote equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

One of the main goals of the ILC is to promote independent living philosophy, which emphasizes consumer control, self-determination, and equal access to community resources. The council actively engages in policy development, public awareness campaigns, and legislative advocacy to advance the rights and inclusion of individuals with disabilities.

The Independent Living Council in Minnesota also plays a vital role in providing training and technical assistance to local CILs across the state. These centers offer a range of services tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals with disabilities, including peer mentoring, skills training, assistive technology, and advocacy support.

By promoting independence, self-advocacy, and community integration, the Independent Living Council in Minnesota strives to create a society that values and respects the rights and abilities of all individuals, regardless of their disability.
