Alaska Independent Living Council

Independent Living

SILCs’ governing boards are made up of a majority of disabled state residents to help ensure they understand and represent the needs and best interests of persons with disabilities. They work to enable independent lifestyles for the disabled and the aging. This isn’t a source for grant money, but for lots of useful information and suggestions.

The Independent Living Council (ILC) in Alaska is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting independent living for individuals with disabilities throughout the state. The ILC works towards creating an inclusive society where people with disabilities have equal opportunities, rights, and access to resources.

The council provides a range of services and programs that empower individuals with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in their communities. This includes information and referral services, advocacy support, skills training, peer mentoring, and assistive technology assistance.

Through collaboration with government agencies, service providers, community organizations, and individuals with disabilities, the ILC strives to influence policies and practices that enhance independent living. They work towards removing barriers and promoting accessibility in areas such as housing, transportation, employment, education, and healthcare.

The ILC also plays a crucial role in raising awareness about disability rights and issues. They organize community events, workshops, and trainings to educate the public and promote disability inclusion. Additionally, the council actively engages in grassroots advocacy efforts to ensure that the voices and needs of individuals with disabilities are heard and addressed.

The Independent Living Council in Alaska serves as a vital resource and support network for individuals with disabilities, working towards fostering independence, equality, and full participation in all aspects of life.
