California State Council on Developmental Disabilities
Developmental Disabilities
The California SCDD awards grant money and strives to ensure the developmentally disabled in the state receive all the services and assistance they require and to further their abilities for self-determination. The Council is mandated by Federal and State law, and legally, its Chairs and committee members must be persons with developmental disabilities or with a family member with one of these conditions.
The State Council on Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) is an organization based in California that focuses on promoting the rights and inclusion of individuals with developmental disabilities. The council operates under the authority of federal and state laws to ensure that people with disabilities have equal opportunities and access to necessary support services.
The SCDD consists of 32 members, the majority of whom are individuals with developmental disabilities or family members of those with disabilities. These members are appointed by the Governor of California and represent diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
The primary mission of the SCDD is to advocate for policies and practices that enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. The council works towards achieving this goal by conducting research, providing public education, and engaging in system change activities. They collaborate with various stakeholders, including government agencies, service providers, and advocacy organizations, to address issues related to education, employment, healthcare, housing, transportation, and community integration.
One of the key functions of the SCDD is to provide funding for projects and initiatives that promote self-determination, independence, and full participation for individuals with developmental disabilities. These projects may involve capacity building, training, community outreach, and advocacy efforts.
The SCDD serves as a resource hub, offering information and assistance to individuals, families, and communities regarding developmental disabilities. They provide guidance on available services, rights, and resources, helping to navigate complex systems and connect people with appropriate supports.
By championing the rights and empowerment of individuals with developmental disabilities, the State Council on Developmental Disabilities plays a vital role in advancing inclusion and improving the quality of life for Californians with disabilities.
